WXXI and the Little Theatre will present a free screening about a film that asks “how do artists act as agents of change?” Art 21: Change, from the PBS series that focuses exclusively on contemporary art and artists, screens Wednesday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m. in Little Theatre 5. It will be followed by a talk back with three local artists, and a reception in the Little Café. This event is free and open to the public, but is on a first come, first served basis.

Art 21: Change introduces audiences to Ai Weiwei, Catherine Opie, and El Anatsui – three artists who bear witness, through their work, to transformation—cultural, material, and aesthetic—and actively engage communities as collaborators and subjects. Ai Weiwei infuses his sculptures, photographs, and public artworks with personal poetry and political conviction, often making use of recognizable and historic Chinese art forms in critical examinations of a host of contemporary Chinese social and political issues. In sculptures of clay, wood, and metal El Anatsui uses and explores materials and formal elements that relate to his aesthetic and cultural environment, exemplifying change and revealing the eternal cycle of all things—destruction, transformation, and regeneration. Catherine Opie investigates the ways in which photographs both document and give voice to social phenomena in America today.

Immediately following the screening, at 7:30 p.m., WXXI and the Little will host a talk back with Jason Bernagozzi, video and new media artist on behalf of RoCo; Sarah C. Rutherford, fine artist and illustrator on behalf of 1975 Gallery; and Allen C. Topolski, Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Rochester.

To learn more about the event, visit WXXI.org/events or call (585) 258-0200. To learn more about the film, visit: http://www.art21.org/films/change.

This event is made possible with a mini-grant award from Art21. It is part of Art21 Access ’12, a celebration of contemporary art and creativity at hundreds museums, schools, libraries, art spaces, and community centers.

ART IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY airs Sundays at 2 p.m., beginning April 29 with Change on WXXI-TV/HD. Through in-depth profiles and interviews, the series reveals the inspiration, vision, and techniques behind the creative works of some of the most accomplished contemporary artists.

and the Susan B Anthony Institute for Gender & Women’s Studies
at the University of Rochester

The Little Theatre and the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of Rochester are excited to combine forces to present a series of films that explore womens’ roles in many aspects. It is the second year for each organization to use Women’s History Month as a springboard for film programming.

“Last year, we each had separate film series; so this year it felt natural to combine our efforts and work together,” said Beth Bailey, Marketing Director at the Little Theatre. “We hope to reach even more people and bring even more voices to the post-film discussions. Last year our audiences were bursting with comments and questions. It would be wonderful for more people to experience that kind of passionate around these films and topics.”

The series is comprised of four films, each playing at 7pm on Wednesdays in March. In addition, the MVP Health Care Little Buddies Series in March is devoted to shirts aimed at tween and teen girls.

Wednesday, March 7th • University of Rochester • Free

“!Women Art Revolution”-reveals how the Feminist Art Movement fused free speech and politics into an art that radically transformed the art and culture of our times.

Wednesday, March 14th • the Little Theatre • $5.00 • Talkback discussion directly follows the film

“Afghan Star”- Pop culture has returned to Afghanistan in the form of “Afghan Star”; an American Idol-like TV show that millions watch each week. The singers, especially the women, risk their lives to follow their passion for song.

Wednesday, March 21st • University of Rochester • Free

“Mother: Caring for 7 Billion”- A clear-eyed documentary on the often controversial topic of the long-term effects of human population growth on humanity’s ability to sustain itself in the face of the finite natural resources of the Earth.

Wednesday, March 28th • the Little Theatre • $5.00 • Talkback discussion directly follows the film

“Miss Representation”– Explores the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America, and challenges the media’s limited portrayal of what it means to be a powerful woman.

Saturday, March 31 • the Little Theatre

“Girl’s POV: Shorts” • 10am • $5.00

A collection of the best short films focusing on female protagonists and exploring common teen and tween girl issues around the globe, for ages 9-16.
